"Praying" is a song performed by Kesha for Rainbow. It was released as the lead single for her third studio album on July 6, 2017, following an announcement made on her Instagram page. The song was written by Kesha with Ben Abraham and Ryan Lewis. An accompanying music video was released the same day.

Background and composition

Kesha spent the summer of 2016 on her third world tour, the Kesha and the Creepies: Fuck the World Tour, which commenced on July 23, 2016, in Las Vegas and ended on October 29, 2016, in Maine. The tour included various covers of songs and several rock and country reworks of her own hit singles. During this time on tour, she wrote many songs for Rainbow. Praying was written sometime between January 2014 when Kesha checked herself into a Rehab clinic and October 2016, when she announced she had finished recording 22 songs and had handed them to her record label.

Lyrics

Well, you almost had me fooled
Told me that I was nothing without you
Oh, but after everything you’ve done
I can thank you for how strong I have become.

‘Cause you brought the flames and you put me through hell
I had to learn how to fight for myself
And we both know all the truth I could tell
I’ll just this is I wish you farewell.

I hope you’re somewhere praying, prayiiing
I hope your soul is changing, changing
I hope you find your peace
Falling on your knees, prayiiing.

I’m proud of who I am
No more monsters, I can breathe again
And you said that I was done
Well, you were wrong and now the best is yet to come
‘Cause I can make it on my own versuri-lyrics.info
And I don’t need you, I found a strength I’ve never known
I’ve been thrown out, I’ve been burned
When I’m finished, they won’t even know your name.

You brought the flames and you put me through hell
I had to learn how to fight for myself
And we both know all the truth I could tell
I’ll just this is I wish you farewell.

I hope you’re somewhere praying, prayiiing
I hope your soul is changing, changing
I hope you find your peace
Falling on your knees, praying.

Ohhh, sometimes, I pray for you at night
Someday, maybe you’ll see the light
Oh, sometime, in life, you’re gonna get what you give
But some things, only God can forgive.

I hope you’re somewhere praying, prayiiing
I hope your soul is changing, changing
I hope you find your peace
Falling on your knees, prayinggg.

Music video

The accompanying video was released on July 6, 2017 and moves between grim black-and-white and hopeful, vivid color. At the start of the video, Kesha speaks in monologue. "Am I dead? Or is this one of those dreams, those horrible dreams that seem like they last forever?… If there is a God or whatever, something, somewhere, why have I been abandoned by everyone and everything I've ever known, I've ever loved?" Kesha plays the piano while outfitted in angel wings. At the end of the music video, she appears to walk on water.
